While the quantity of unclaimed property varies, the state of Washington has received more than $1 billion in unclaimed assets since the program began in 1955. However, keep in mind that the unclaimed money in Washington may not reflect all of the unclaimed money owed to Washington residents, as you may have unclaimed assets in other states or the federal government’s possession.
When you look at the big picture, the amount of money that hasn’t been claimed is startling. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to administering unclaimed property across the United States. While the figures fluctuate as a new property is added and another property is claimed, NAUPA believes that the total value of unclaimed property in the United States is now around $42 billion.
