There is a shockingly large quantity of unclaimed money and property. Because of the nature of the unclaimed property, the figure fluctuates, although the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators estimates it to be roughly $42 billion (NAUPA).
In Michigan, there are hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed property. There are at least a million homes that haven’t been claimed yet. The greatest claim so far has been $2.4 million. In addition, there is an actual property in the database that has not been claimed. On the other hand, the property is only held for three years before being auctioned, with the money going to the property owner.
